Europe’s eyes are bigger than its stomach

The European Union has been suffering from chronic political indigestion ever since the last enlargement two years ago brought 10 much poorer new members into the club.

It is not just about enlargement. There is a popular backlash against some of the EU’s fundamental achievements – not least the single market that allows a free flow of goods, services, capital and labour.
