Washington's think-tanks are increasingly exploiting their powerful brands to go global at a time when America's image worldwide is plumbing new lows.

To promote US national interests, understand the world better, ride the wave of globalisation and seek solutions to common problems such as global warming and energy security, to seek alternative sources of funding - all are cited as reasons for international expansion.
