Rising stars not ready to take the lead

Few Liberal Democrat MPs expect Charles Kennedy to stand aside as leader in the foreseeable future, not least because none of the party's rising stars is considered ready to take over.

Mr Kennedy had a shambolic start to the campaign, blundering over the details of his local income tax policy at the manifesto launch. But even one of his more critical colleagues said he “grew in stature” as the campaign progressed.
