Merck eyes larger Merial

Merck, the US pharmaceutical group, has given the strongest indication yet of its intention to recreate an enlarged joint venture with Sanofi-Aventis of France to sell medicinal products for animals.

The combination of the two groups’ products into Merial, which has had to be restructured following Merck’s takeover of Schering-Plough, would create one of the world’s largest businesses in the animal health sector.
