Berlusconi drops plan to alter rules on party access to media

Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's prime minister, yesterday dropped a plan to change the rules governing political parties' media access in an election campaign after some of his centre-right allies expressed misgivings.

Mr Berlusconi's Forza Italia party withdrew a legislative amendment under which television time in the run-up to Italy's national election on April 9 would have been allocated according to each party's strength in parliament.
