John Updike, the great chronicler of middle-class America, died yesterday from lung cancer. He was 76.

One of the world's most celebrated writers, through scores of novels, stories, poems, plays and criticism, Updike always returned to his abiding subject: the US. He was that rare thing: an unashamedly patriotic conservative writer.
