Russians took Iraqi explosives, says US official

The 350 tonnes of high explosives and other weapons missing in Iraq may have been removed by "Russian units" shortly before the US-led invasion, a senior Pentagon official said yesterday.

The claim by John Shaw, deputy under-secretary of defence, came as President George W. Bush yesterday accused John Kerry, the Democratic candidate, of making "wild charges" over the disappearance of the munitions.
