Telecom Italia to stay in Brazil

Telecom Italia, groaning under €35bn ($44bn) of net debt, defied market sentiment on Wednesday and insisted it would not sell its Brazilian business. But it will cut 4,000 jobs and dispose of other assets in a bid to revive its fortunes.

Franco Bernabè, chief executive, admitted that the telecommunications group, one of Europe’s top five operators, was “a difficult business in a difficult environment”.
