Biden to contribute weight of experience

Introducing his running mate at a rally on Saturday, Barack Obama described Joe Biden as a "scrappy kid from Scranton" who was dedicated to his family and committed to his Catholic faith.

The fact that Mr Biden was born in Scranton, an industrial town in Pennsylvania often cited as a symbol of blue-collar values, was not the main reason he was chosen as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate.
