The European Union and China yesterday accused each other of politicising the issue of food safety.

The exchanges marked a fiery start to high-level meetings between European and Chinese leaders that are already overshadowed by Chinese anger over contact between Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and the Dalai Lama.
