Carolyn McCall may claim that she did not start out with huge ambitions, but as the 2008 Veuve Clicquot business woman of the year, the energetic media group boss puts her first major accolade on the shelf.

The 46-year-old's key role at GMG is to ensure its investments - which include national and regional newspapers, radio and Trader Media - protect the Guardian newspaper.
