Tighter security planned for US borders

Americans re-entering the US from anywhere in the western hemisphere will be required to carry passports or other secure travel documents, under new proposals designed to strengthen the country's borders against terrorism.

The proposed measures are part of a series of tough border controls introduced since the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks, but they would be among the first to affect both US and foreign travellers.
