Starting a big new job is always a memorable occasion, but Dipak Jain’s first day as dean of Kellogg business school at Northwestern University, near Chicago, was particularly remarkable.

For one thing, at the relatively tender age of 43, he became the first Indian head of a major US business school. More importantly, it was September 11 2001, the day terrorists struck at the World Trade Center in New York and at the Pentagon.
