Inflation falls to lowest level in five years

Inflation fell sharply in September to its lowest level in five years, leaving sterling under fresh pressure against major currencies.

Inflation as measured by the consumer price index dropped to an annual rate of 1.1 per cent last month, down from 1.6 per cent in August, the Office of National Statistics reported. Economists on average had expected inflation to fall to 1.3 per cent
