Witnesses fail to back Graner defence in abuse case

The defence for Specialist Charles Graner, who is being court-martialled for allegedly abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison, suffered a serious blow on Wednesday after successive witnesses provided scant evidence that he was following orders when he abused prisoners.

Spec Graner faces more than 17 years in prison for abusing prisoners at the notorious Baghdad prison. The government argues that he and six other military police were rogue soldiers. But his lawyers argue that military intelligence officers ordered Spec Graner and other low-ranking military police to soften up detainees for interrogations.
