Number of new houses rises 13%

New house building rose from a multi-year low in the last quarter but continues to undershoot annual government targets by more than half.

There were 18,340 housing starts in England in the quarter ending March 2009, according to government figures released on Thursday, up 13 per cent on the previous quarter but 44 per cent lower than the same period last year.
