The Department for Work and Pensions is considering terminating a contract with a private company, one of whose employees mislaid a computer memory stick containing names and passwords for one of the biggest pubic sector websites.

The memory stick was lost by an employee of Atos Origin, which manages the government's online Gateway, a site where people can register to use a range of public services including tax and benefit claims.
