Tories ‘look both ways’ and lose Heathrow vote

The Conservatives were on the back foot on Wednesday night after losing a Commons vote on the expansion of Heathrow and admitting they were open to further airport expansion in the south-east.

Labour whips and Gordon Brown himself pulled out the stops to kill off a backbench uprising over the proposed third runway by 297 votes to 278.
