Tony Blair on Monday told the House of Commons that Britain had been perfectly justified in vetoing last weekend's proposed European Union budget deal, insisting that the proposal contained “inadequate” plans for a reform of the EU's future funding. But despite the serious clash between Britain and France over the EU budget at last Friday's summit in Brussels, the British prime minister was keen to strike a diplomatic tone.
He insisted he was determined to use Britain's forthcoming EU presidency to try to strike a deal on the budget.
