Rage grows over slow federal response

Criticism intensified on Friday over the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina, with local officials in the ravaged southern states branding the chaos in the worst-hit areas a “national disgrace”.

Washington lawmakers also joined the chorus condemning the government's reaction to the humanitarian crisis. The official complaints underscore the tough political battle that could await President George W. Bush if the situation does not improve rapidly.
