Homeowners are feeling the effect of higher interest rates according to figures that show mortgage lending fell 12 per cent last month.
The Council for Mortgage Lenders said the monthly fall in gross lending to about £30bn was more than double the decline usually seen in September, while the annual increase in volume of 2.5 per cent was the lowest in two years. It is predicting further falls in lending as the impact of the credit squeeze is felt.
