Energy fears highlight trade’s murky side

While this week’s headlines have concerned gas prices and pipeline shutdowns, among the most contentious issues in the gas dispute is the role of a little-known trading company called Rosukrenergo.

This week Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, highlighted its ambiguous position, claiming its job was to channel political funds to Ukrainian political leaders and saying: “They had to have a middleman so they can receive dividends, and finance their political campaigns.”
