Growth is key as Berlin ring-fences spending

The new German government will not reduce public spending until the country has emerged from the downturn, the next finance minister has warned.

In his first interview since his appointment was unveiled last week, Wolfgang Schäuble, a close ally of chancellor Angela Merkel, cemented the coalition’s message that boosting growth, not fixing the burgeoning budget deficit, would be its priority.
