Zuma says crisis will slow progress

Jacob Zuma on Wednesday said the economic downturn would affect “the pace at which South Africa is able to address the social and economic challenges it faces”.

In his first state of the nation address, the new South African president said fighting poverty would be the cornerstone of government policy but cited the recession to dampen expectations – heightened ahead of his election in April – of rapid results.
