Gordon Brown will on Monday declare that the UK regards the US as its “most important ally” on the international stage, insisting London and Washington must maintain firm pressure on Iran over its nuclear programme.

Delivering his first keynote speech on foreign policy since he became prime minister, Mr Brown will face down suggestions on both sides of the Atlantic that the UK is “cold-shouldering” Washington as the Bush presidency enters its final year.
