Hopes fade over private sector role in NHS

Private sector hopes of a sustainable role in delivering National Health Service care are receding, judging by a study commissioned by the NHS commercial directorate.

The 2004 study estimated the NHS needed to buy 450,000-500,000 procedures a year if the market that has attracted overseas health groups as well as UK operators such as Bupa and Nuffield was not to "stagnate and ultimately collapse".
