Problems with late payments have increased sharply in the past 12 months, according to a survey by BACS, the electronic payments specialist, which has calculated that £16bn is owed in late payments to small and medium-sized enterprises.

The survey of 500 senior executives of SMEs found that 59 per cent had experienced problems with delayed customer or supplier payments, almost twice as many as in a similar survey in 2004.
