FC Barcelona: ‘More than a club’ plays its own game

On the face of it, there is no reason why Barcelona should have the most popular football club in Europe.

The metropolitan area is only the continent’s ninth largest. FC Barcelona never had the ready foreign exposure of English clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United, which spread their name partly though networks left over from the British empire, such as the English language and the BBC. On the contrary: during the decades that General Franco ruled Spain, Barcelona was largely closed off from the world.
