FT Interview: Kofi Annan

It’s just over a year since Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary general, helped save Kenya from a crisis that risked pitching one of Africa’s hitherto more stable countries into civil war. Over a thousand people were killed in ethnic violence after elections which President Mwai Kibaki claimed to win, but supporters of his opposition rival Raila Odinga said he had stolen. Mr Annan brokered a power sharing agreement between the two men, and helped drew up an agenda for reforms designed to prevent a repeat of the crisis. Kenyan politicians and civil society leaders have been meeting in Geneva to assess progress so far. William Wallis, FT Africa editor, and Patrick Smith, editor of Africa Confidential talked to Mr Annan in Geneva.

FT: There is a sense that holding this meeting here in Switzerland is a terrible confession, that Kenyans have not been able to sort it out internally and so they had to come all this way.
