Fred Thompson appeared on US television screens last Sunday in the role of Ulysses S. Grant, the former president and civil war general, in a film adaptation of the historical account Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

Variety, the entertainment industry newspaper, was unimpressed, declaring that "his fake beard does most of the acting".
