Sony BMG drops online music copyright protection

Sony BMG became the last of the major music companies to drop online copyright protection on Thursday after it announced a deal to sell its tracks through Amazon.com in the unprotected MP3 format.

The deal, which will take effect later this month, overturns Sony BMG’s previous reluctance to sell songs without so-called digital rights management software, which attempts to limit unauthorised copying of digital music files.
