Bird flu does not appear to have infected the UK's wild bird population, allaying fears that an outbreak might have spread beyond the Bernard Matthews plant at Holton, Suffolk, according to the government's chief scientist.

Sir David King, the government's chief scientific adviser, said: "At this point, I have got a great sense of relief. That is my overridingfeeling."
