Alistair Darling on Thursday joined forces with City grandees to mount a staunch defence of Britain’s global “super-banks”, amid warnings that an incoming Conservative government could turn the sector into a “cottage industry”.
The chancellor linked up with Sir Win Bischoff, former chairman of Citigroup, to oppose a Tory suggestion that banking conglomerates be broken up, separating “casino” investment banking from retail operations.
