Freddie Mac posts record loss

Freddie Mac, the US government-sponsored mortgage financier, on Thursday reported a record $2.5bn loss for the fourth quarter of 2007 as the slump in the domestic housing market deepened.

“Today’s economy represents one of the most severe housing downturns in American history,” said Richard Syron, chief executive.
