Freddie Mac secures SEC registration

Freddie Mac yesterday cleared one of the last remaining obstacles to raising new capital through a stock offering as it fulfilled an agreement made with regulators six years ago before the company uncovered $5bn of accounting errors and restated earnings.

The second-largest government-sponsored mortgage financier received approval to register with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, sources involved in the talks said, after Freddie had earlier yesterday filed for permission.
