Bumpy ride continues for carmakers in US

Carmakers took another beating in the US last month, with falling petrol prices and tax-rebate cheques failing to offset the credit crunch and the housing slump.

However, a slew of discounts and other incentives have braked the drop in sales of gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles and pick-up trucks.
