Call me unimaginative, but Indian road transport was not a subject I had expected to come up in conversation with Ian Ritchie, chief executive of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which runs the Wimbledon championships.

Yet here we are, looking out at the cranes around Wimbledon’s centre court and the voluble Ritchie is talking about just that. “We have just signed a deal which is my favourite of the year for a scooter licensee in India,” he says. “So there will be a Wimbledon scooter bombing around the streets in Mumbai.”
