The Confederation of British Industry raises the stakes on Monday over the role of the private sector in public service provision as it challenges the government to give the green light to another wave of health treatment centres.

The employers’ organisation cast the decision as a “pivotal test” of Gordon Brown’s ability to deliver on his promise that National Health Service reform will go “wider and deeper”.
