Ukrainian court puts election outcome on hold

Viktor Yushchenko, the Ukrainian opposition leader, yesterday won a vital battle in his efforts to overturn the results of the country's disputed presidential election when the Supreme Court suspended the decision to declare Viktor Yanukovich, prime minister, the winner.

The ruling prevents any attempt by Mr Yanukovich's supporters to rush his inauguration and try to pre-empt Mr Yushchenko challenging a result he has condemned as fraudulent.
