Swedish public considers controversial reforms too harsh

Sir, John Thornhill (“How the ‘nasty party’ can defy Juncker's curse”, September 16) describes how Europe is closely monitoring whether the Swedish centre-right government, headed by Fredrik Reinfeldt, will be able to get re-elected despite pushing through controversial reforms. He describes how the role of the Social Democrats is to be the “nice” party that preserves the integrity of the Swedish social model, while the occasional “nasty” centre-right government serves to ensure its financial viability.
