European companies hit harder than US rivals

European companies suffered a bigger fall in first-quarter profits than their US counterparts in a striking contrast to the underlying performance of their home economies.

Net earnings have fallen 23.4 per cent among 2,138 companies in Europe in the first quarter, while 5,494 US companies saw a drop of only 13.4 per cent, according to Bloomberg data last week after nearly all groups on both continents had reported.
