Iran parliament backs plan to cut subsidies

Iran’s conservative parliament on Sunday gave the go-ahead for the government to introduce steep cuts in energy and food subsidies.

The move to slash subsidies, which cost about $100bn (€67.5bn, £62.5bn) a year, is a political gamble for the administration of Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, the president.
