Afghan pressure mounts on Nato allies

France and Germany are under pressure to raise the number of troops they have in Afghanistan after decisions by the Obama administration and several Nato powers and US allies to commit to a major new deployment.

President Barack Obama is expected to commit about 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan. “The commander-in-chief has issued the orders,” said Robert Gibbs, Mr Obama’s spokesman, signalling that the president has made his decision.
