US shift increases Abbas isolation

The latest shift in US policy towards the Middle East peace process has delivered a fresh blow to the standing of Mahmoud Abbas, leaving the Palestinian leader increasingly isolated as he battles conflicting political pressures at home and abroad.

The president of the Palestinian Authority has already seen his poll ratings fall sharply, largely in response to the botched handling of a UN inquiry into the recent Gaza war.
