The government of President Hamid Karzai controls less than a third of Afghanistan and the insurgency against it has not been contained, the head of US intelligence said yesterday.

Michael McConnell, director of national intelligence, said the insurgent effort in the country had not been contained, with Taliban insurgents in control of 10 or 11 per cent of the country.
