A piece of paper can be a powerful shield

The smartest of people do the daftest things. Some 50 per cent of the UK population lacks a will, leaving surviving family vulnerable to difficulty and distress when individuals die intestate.

And yet wills remain a key part of financial and estate planning. Should you die without a will, all assets transfer to an administrator you may not have chosen, for eventual distribution determined by government rules. These could leave your nearest and dearest pretty badly off.
