Genetic discovery could help restore sight to the blind

Scientists have made nerve cells sensitive to light by adding a single gene. Their discovery could help bionic engineers develop a new type of artificial eye to restore sight to the blind.

The researchers at Imperial College London and Manchester University converted neurones into "photoreceptors" through a relatively simple genetic engineering procedure.
