Argentina’s Kirchner strengthens grip on Congress

Néstor Kirchner, Argentina’s leftwing president, has emerged politically stronger from Sunday’s mid-term elections, extending the number of loyal supporters in Congress.

The results will likely further his bid to become undisputed leader of the ruling Peronist party. But with a handful of defeats in key constituencies, they also leave him short of an overall majority in the lower Congressional chamber as a testing legislative agenda looms.
