Pensions setback for leveraged buy-outs

Private equity firms seeking to buy British businesses will be dealt a blow on Thursday when the Pensions Regulator says that trustees have a duty to demand substantial assets up front to safeguard retirement benefits in the event of a leveraged buy-out.

Guidance to be issued on Thursday will apply even to companies whose pension schemes appear well funded in accounting terms.
