Prosecutor has ‘evidence’ to charge Zuma

Tensions at the heart of South Africa’s government intensified on Thursday when the country’s chief prosecutor said there was enough evidence to charge Jacob Zuma, the newly elected head of the ruling African National Congress, for corruption. A decision on whether to prosecute was “imminent”, he said.

The announcement, which Mr Zuma’s supporters denounced as motivated by his opponents in the party to discredit him, overshadowed his maiden speech as leader.
